The American Kestrel, also called the Sparrow Hawk is the smallest falcon in North America. About the size of a robin, the American Kestrel is 10-12" long with reddish upper parts and a bluish cap, more brilliantly colored in the male than in the female, which does the lioness' share of the hunting.
Her familiar cry of klee-klee-klee-klee-klee is usually uttered on the wing as she hovers in midair against the wind while searching for prey with her keen eyes. Kestrels are extremely fast and graceful in flight. They are often seen along rural roads in high tree branches and perched on power lines with their heads bent in concentration.
